Synopsis

The Stranger: After having made three commercial disasters in a row, Orson Welles was badly in need of a hit in Hollywood. The result was The Stranger. Though restrained and conventional by Welles’ standards, the film is an undeniable masterpiece. Set shortly after WWII, it casts Edward G. Robinson as Wilson, a Nazi hunter assigned the task of finding the infamous Franz Kindler, one of the architects of the genocide of the Jews. Wilson traces Kindler to the sleepy college town of Hartford, Connecticut, where he comes to suspect that Professor Charles Rankin (Welles) is actually Kindler hiding behind a new identity.
The Thief of Bagdad: An Arabian Nights fantasy-adventure which is one of the truly great productions of the 1920´s and remains hugely entertaining today, Raoul Walsh´s "The Thief of Bagdad" showcases producer-star Douglas Fairbanks as carefree Ahmed the Thief. What he wants, he takes -- until he is smitten with a beautiful Princess. To win her hand he must prove himself worthier than his rival, the villainous Mongol Prince. Pursuing this goal, he braves the Valley of Fire, the Valley of the Monsters, the Cavern of the Enchanted Trees, the Old Man of the Midnight Sea, the Abode of the Winged Horse and more, romping through astounding sets and feats of derring-do with the aid of such special effects as never had been seen before.
As designed by William Cameron Menzies, The Thief´s fanciful Middle Eastern kingdom is a wondrous page from "The Arabian Nights´ spiced with occasional dashes of German expressionism. This beautiful video presentation is digitally mastered from a 35mm negative, meticulously tinted in the style of the period, and presented with a score based upon the original music cue sheets and recorded by Gaylord Carter on a behemoth Wurlitzer theater organ.
