Synopsis
Historical accuracy goes right out the window in this 1945 tale of the notorious pirate Captain Kidd. But who cares? Charles Laughton appears to be having a blast playing the buccaneer (a safe assumption, since he would agree to play Kidd again in 1952s Abbott And Costello Meet Captain Kidd). This time around, Kidd poses as a shipbuilder in order to escort one of the King of Englands treasure-laden ships through the pirate-infested waters of Madagascar. (Naturally, there’s also a beautiful woman aboard.) Of course, Captain Kidd and his crew of cutthroats have some nefarious plans of their own. Captain Kidd was directed by Rowland V. Lee, whod proven himself a master at this sort of thing with The Count Of Monte Cristo (1934) and The Three Musketeers (1935). He also directed 1939s Son Of Frankenstein. Here, Lee is aided immeasurably by Laughton and a great supporting cast: Randolph Scott, John Carradine, Barbara Britton, Gilbert Roland, John Qualen, William Farnum and Henry Daniell. Of course, having Archie Stout handling the cinematography doesnt hurt, either.
