Synopsis
In the hands of Kenji Mizoguchi (Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff), the simple story of a man redeemed by a woman´s love is no less than profound. The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum pulls the viewer into a world of pure love, intense heartache, and serene triumph. When Kikunosuke, a mediocre actor from a famous Kabuki family, falls in love with a maid, he is cast out. The faithful Otoku supports her husband as he struggles to perfect his art. In the end, she is quite ill, yet willing to leave her husband so that he may take his rightful place at the head of the Kabuki community. Mizoguchi, who felt he came into his own with The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum, achieved the perfect balance between distance and passion with his mesmerizing camera techniques. Made up mostly of one mobile take per sequence, this graceful film captures life´s quiet revelations with moving authenticity.
