Synopsis

On the top of a hill, in one of Belo Horizonte’s roughest favelas (shantytowns), four young men, Jorge, Grau, Roque and Zequiel, dream about setting up a radio station that will broadcast the truth about the struggles of life in the favelas. The film, based on a true story, dramatizes the birth of a pirate radio station called Radio Favela, created in the 80’s in a slum of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The station’s courageous programming and spontaneity drew the attention of a large number of listeners, including city leaders and eventually the police.

The film celebrates the power of words and the persistence of a small group of people who made a difference. Since its creation, the influence of Radio Favela has reached far beyond its airwaves. Um Onda No Ar is a narrative feature firmly rooted in the documentary world, which depicts characters based on the real-life people who created Radio Favela. A portion of the proceeds from this film are used to keep this important radio station on the airwaves in Belo Horizonte..
