Synopsis

This masterful early Bergman (Autumn Sonata, Cries and Whispers) film is the second installment in a "shrewdly ironic, lewdly hilarious trilogy" (Time). Along with A Lesson in Love and Smiles of a Summer Night, Dreams reports on the battle of the sexes with humor and insight. A day in the life of a model-agency owner and her top model characterizes love as an alternately exhilarating and frustrating tug-of-war. The older woman (Eva Dahlbeck, Smiles of a Summer Night) reunites briefly with her ex-lover, until his wife´s appearance proves the futility of their affair. The younger woman (Harriet Andersson, Monika) takes up with an aging consul who lavishes her with gifts in hopes of seducing her. Like many of Bergman´s later works, Dreams illuminates the inner world of women—their passions and obsessions—with superior direction and flawless performances..
