Synopsis

This haunting tale of emotional repression--winner of Cannes Film Festival´s Grand Prize--is the masterwork of director Alf Sjoberg (Torment). A major force in the Swedish film renaissance, Sjoberg translated August Strindberg´s acclaimed play into a film of great beauty and depth. Brilliant cinematography and highly original flashback sequences tell the story of a noblewoman who allows her coachman to seduce her. Freed from the play´s one-room set, the action of Miss Julie flows enchantingly across a lush estate where servants dance in celebration of Midsummer´s Eve. Their revelry provides stunning contrast to the anguish and self-denial that follows Miss Julie´s all-too-brief romantic interlude. Anita Bjork (Secrets of Women) portrays the tormented Julie with a sense of tragedy that belies her vibrant, youthful appearance. Ulf Palme is equally superb, bringing an arrogant sensuality to the role of Julie´s lover. Their powerful performances, along with Sjoberg´s fascinating cinematic techniques, made Miss Julie an international success..
