Synopsis
The new version follows a similar story to the original, but as Williams puts it, "goes off in a completely new direction". In each case the movies were set in the same time period as the novel‹the mid-1800s. Both had a group of adventurers gather together to follow the trail of a band of explorers who disappeared years earlier. And in both cases, the adventurers must overcome a variety of obstacles before they can find their way to the "center of the Earth". However, it is at this point where the two versions diverge. In the 59 version, once the adventurers find the center of the Earth the film is basically over. Within minutes, they are thrust back to the surface. In the new version, as Williams explains, "another whole plot line develops once [they] reach the center of the Earth".
